You know those little girls who dress up as Disney princesses in the bright, shimmery costumes and dream about their prince rescuing them?

That was never me.

In this story, it’s the witch who saves the prince.

Ever since I joined the Wicked Society, my tarot readings are always about sacrifice for the greater good and martyrdom. In other words, any day now I’m going to lose something or someone I love. Evidently, my spirit guides are the ride or die types.

For years, I’ve asked the cards the same question about my crush. Will Tate Winthrop fall in love with me? The answer is always someday.

As in someday Tate will love me back.

Someday there won’t be a group of witches using dark magic to destroy our coven.

Someday I’ll stop having the same dream about a handsome prince with long blond dreadlocks kissing a woman wearing a sparkly, poofy, ball gown.

Someday my witch will come.

This is book two in the Wicked Society series of interconnected lighthearted paranormal romances with a cozy mystery twist.

Did it make you a bad friend if you were completely, a hundred percent envious of that friend? Yes? No? Kind of?

I figured it was somewhere in between.

That’s what I was mulling over as I watched Ivy Morgan brush thick, red curls over her shoulder, laughing at something her boyfriend Ren Owens had said to her.

At least I wasn’t envious of that—their love. Okay, well, that wasn’t entirely true. Pretty sure anyone who was as single as me would be envious of all that warm and fuzzy that was passed back and forth with each long look or casual brush of skin. The two could barely tear their gazes away from one another to eat the dinner we’d grabbed at the cute little diner inside the shopping center on Prytania Street.

I honest to God couldn’t be happier for them. They’d been through so much—way more than two people should ever have to go through to be together, and here they were, stronger and more in love than ever, and they deserved that happiness.

But their epic love story wasn’t the source of a current case of the green-eye monster that was sitting on my shoulder.

Ivy was just such a… badass.

Even right now, relaxed in the chair, surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights with her hand in Ren’s and her belly full of a cheeseburger deluxe and crinkle fries and half of my tater tots, she could kick ass and take names along with addresses, telephone numbers, and social security numbers.

If the proverbial poo hit the fan, you called Ivy or Ren.

If you needed to know what streets Royal intersected with, you called… me. Or if you needed coffee or fresh beignets but were currently busy, you know, saving the world, you’d call me.

The three of us were all members of the Order, a widespread organization that was literally the only thing that stood between mankind and complete, utter enslavement and destruction by the fae. And not the super cute fae found in Disney movies or some crap like that. Humans thought they were on top of the food chain. They were wrong. The fae were.

The only thing pop culture got right about the fae was their slightly pointy ears. That was it. The fae were more than just beings from another world—the Otherworld—they were capable of glamouring their appearance to blend in with humans. But all Order members, even me, were warded at birth against the glamour. We saw through the human façade to the creature that lurked beneath.

Review: Spell Bound (A Fairy Retelling #3) by Dorian Tsukioka

Goodreads Summary:

Sold into slavery – Entwined in magic – Destined to die

In order to save her family, Aniya sacrifices herself as a slave to Rahotep, the High Priest and second most powerful man in all of Egypt. In the dungeon of the palace she finds herself entwined in both magic and a budding romance with one of Rahotep’s own servants.

The High Priest has his own plans for Aniya — plans that lead to her death. Aniya is faced with choosing her own path or sacrificing herself once again for the sake of those she loves most.

Spell Bound is a fairy tale retelling woven with threads of magic and sacrificial love. If you like page-turning action, surprising twists and turns, and heroic love, you’ll love Dorian Tsukioka’s newest fairy tale adventure into the mystical world of ancient Egypt.

My Review

Spell Bound will take you back to Ancient Egypt on a mythical adventure. After reading one of the Fairy Retelling books previously, I knew I was “bound” to enjoy this addition to the series! This is the first book in an Egyptian setting that I’ve read, so that definitely took some getting used to, but it made for an overall unique story that I had never encountered before.

Aniya is only a child when she is stripped of her family and livelihood and sent to live in the palace. Although she is originally taken prisoner, once she discovers she has magical talents she is soon given a higher title than she ever could have imagined. However, not all is what it seems, and before she can blink, her life gets flipped upside down and she finds herself on a trip she never intended to take.

Spell Bound had a swift plot filled with magic, mythology, and suspense. There was never a dull moment. Though some parts of it happened a little too fast for enjoyment, the overall story was genuinely inspired. I could really tell that Tsukioka had done her research and put a lot of effort in letting that show through the events that transpired. The ending was sweet and completely satisfying. If you’re looking for a quick fun read and a trip back in time, then Spell Bound is the book for you!

Supernatural Chronicles: The Asgardians (Dynamis in New Orleans Book 9) by S.T. Bend

Goodreads Summary:

Inga Andersson just can’t catch a break. She’s supposed to be enjoying a ski week in beautiful Åre, Sweden, with her immortal-assassin-husband. Instead, she and Gunnar are trapped inside a bizarre scavenger hunt, unraveling an incomprehensible riddle at the bequest of a mysterious being. And if Inga and Gunnar don’t decipher the puzzle and deliver a mythological relic to a New Orleans graveyard within three days, they’ll be ejected from the Norse pantheon, stripped of their immortality, and cast as the solitary line of defense against the onslaught of frost giants and Helbeasts ready to bring about Midgard’s fall. What started as a party game has become a lethal challenge with irreparable consequences, not only for Inga, but for the god she loves . . . and the realm she adores.

Let the hunt begin.

My Review

I absolutely loved Gunnar and Inga’s relationship in The Elsker Saga (especially Gunnar) so I was more than ready to have an up close and personal look at their love and story.  This book was a beautiful quick glimpse, that was exciting and fun all the way through. Characters from other books by Bende are seen and mentioned as well which made it all the more fangirl worthy! I only wish the book had been longer, but hopefully there will be more from them! *wink wink* S.T. Bende!!

The Asgardians had plenty of action and Norse awesomeness to go around, but I would expect no less! Gunnar and Inga were absolutely adorable, not to mention totally badass! The storyline was unique and the plot was  fast paced! If you are looking for a great quick read filled with Godly battles and steamy romance, then I would definitely recommend this novella!

Review: Cursed Beauty (A Fairy Retelling #1) by Dorian Tsukioka

Goodreads Summary:

A pair of glass slippers that can change her life? When something is too good to be true, it usually is…

Adelaide has lived her entire life cursed with a birthmark that makes people shy away. When an invitation to the Elder Prince’s ball falls in her lap, she knows attending would only cause people to shun her more.

A fairy godmother feels her pain and offers her a pair of glass slippers that not only transform her ragged dress to an elegant gown, but also removes the mark that covers her face. However, Adelaide soon learns that the beautiful slippers can steal away more than just her birthmark, leaving her cursed in a far worse way.

This retelling of the classic Cinderella story will resound with readers of young adult fiction who love paranormal fantasy, fairy tales, and a splash of romance.

My Review

Cursed Beauty brought forth a dark and twisted version of what we know as Cinderella. In this tale, the heroin is known as Adelaide (which btw is one of my fav names ever so props to Dorian Tsukioka), a girl with fiery red hair who has an unfortunate birthmark covering one side of her face. Her father passes away not at a young age but during the story and her stepmother is not exactly who she seems. Oh and her relationship with the prince is far from picture perfect.

After the death of her father, things start to go downhill fast for Adelaide leaving her in need of a fairy godmother who is the farthest thing from “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.” Adelaide quickly becomes enthralled by the magic that comes from not the fairy godmother, but from the glass slippers themselves, and in doing so, she begins to realize her true feelings toward the Prince, Julian. The plot quickly thickened as Adelaide learns of the true intentions behind the fairy godmothers slippers and she must hurry to save those she holds most dear as well as her very life.

Cursed Beauty kept me interested and intrigued by the unique telling of a classic fairytale throughout. The characters were detailed, the brewing romance was charming, and the plot movement was swift and to the point. Though the story wasn’t without its few cheesy moments, I found myself enjoying every minute of it, and wishing that it wasn’t a novella so that I might get more time to see the characters’ story continue! However, by the time the ending rolled around, I was eager to see how the events would play out, and was completely satisfied with the outcome, if not a little surprised by the hero who saved the day.

Overall, Cursed Beauty was a lovely tale of princes and magic, foolish choices and happy endings! And I commend Dorian Tsukioka for thinking outside of the box and taking such a different turn with a classic fairytale.
