Goodreads Summary:

STAND TOGETHER OR FALL ALONE.

THE FATE OF THE EVERLIFE HANGS IN THE BALANCE.

At seventeen years old, Tenley “Ten” Lockwood had to make the ultimate choice—where to live after she died. Loyalty to her selected realm has not wavered…until now. She is out of time. Sacrifices must be made, and a terrible price must be paid. But is she too late?

As the Everlife descends into darkness, a single truth becomes clear: Troika and Myriad must unite—or perish. In order to bring sworn enemies together, Ten must enter forbidden territory…and destroy the powerful Prince of Ravens. But there’s only one way inside—bonding with Killian Flynn, a deadly rival who sets her blood aflame.

When nothing goes as planned and betrayal leads to the edge of utter defeat, Ten and Killian will have to rebuild trust from the ashes of their hearts. Victory seems impossible, the odds stacked against them. In the end, how far will they be willing to go for the sake of their realms and the Everlife?

My Review

Everlife was a wonderful conclusion to the Everlife series. I was most definitely pleased with the direction the story went in. And although certain plot elements were a little bit frustrating at times. Overall, I was left feeling satisfied by this lovely story.

Everlife picks up right where Lifeblood left off, and unfortunately jumps right in to the insanity. Now that Killian has decided to change his loyalties to Troika and join himself physically with Ten, he must face the deadly consequences that come from the aftermath of such an important decision. Meanwhile, the war between Myriad and Troika grows ever more tumultuous, and soon the two rivals will finally meet in a battle of a lifetime.

There were very few slow moments in this third and last installment of the Everlife series. Although I couldn’t help but notice similarities in the plot to the previous novels, I still found myself intrigued by each new development. Despite its fast pace, I couldn’t help but be frustrated with the romantic direction this book went in. Just when you think there is hope for Killian and Ten yet, Showalter throws a massive curveball in to spilt them apart. Thus, there was very little real relationship time dedicated to Ten and Killian. Thankfully, there is still a happy ending for them.

As the events reached a head, I was utterly astonished and impressed by the allusion that Gena Showalter created with her protagonists. Never have I ever seen an author spin a scifi story into one that has Christian roots! I loved it, and I commend her for going against the norm.  That might have been my favorite part of the ending overall.

If you have already begun your journey with the Everlife series, I strongly encourage you to finish it and read this third book.

Review: Lifeblood (Everlife #2) by Gena Showalter

9780373212194.indd

Goodreads Summary:

My Firstlife is over, but my Everlife is only now beginning.

With her last living breath, Tenley “Ten” Lockwood made her choice and picked her realm in the Everlife. Now, as the war between Troika and Myriad rages, she must face the consequences.

Because Ten possesses a rare supernatural ability to absorb and share light, the Powers That Be have the highest expectations for her future—and the enemy wants her neutralized. Fighting to save her Secondlife, she must learn about her realm from the ground up while launching her first mission: convincing a select group of humans to join her side before they die. No pressure, right?

But Ten’s competition is Killian, the boy she can’t forget—the one who gave up everything for her happiness. He has only one shot at redemption: beating Ten at a game she’s never even played. As their throw-downs heat up, so do their undeniable feelings, and soon, Ten will have to make another choice. Love…or victory.

My Review

Reading book two of the Everlife series was so long overdue! I had to reread Firstlife to make sure I had all my facts straight, and I’m most definitely glad that I did! Lifeblood was a good addition to the series, not fantastic by any means, but definitely enjoyable.

Lifeblood continues the events of Firstlife as if book one had never ended. Now that Ten has died and made her decision to join Troika, she must learn to quickly adapt to her new way of life. Unfortunately, there is quite the learning curve to be conquered, as she meets more allies yet encounters even more potential foes. Throughout it all, her love for Killian remains steadfast, but neither of them can deny the impending clash between Troika and Myriad. Killian will soon have to make the choice between his love for Ten and his loyalty to Myriad.

I most definitely appreciated the way in which Troika was constructed. The entire concept is still so exceptional to read about and experience. I love the idea of there being these places you go before your “second death.” Furthermore, my fondness for Killian grew much greater in this second installment. I must admit, I was kind of on the fence with him after reading book one, but no more. I love his relationship with Ten, its sweet and selfless beyond compare.

My only qualm with Lifeblood involves the redundancy of plot events. It felt like a lot of developments were on repeat with a few details changed here and there. Essentially, Ten gets a new mission, things go unexpectedly, and a battle breaks lose between Troika and Myriad again. I can’t tell you how many times that happened. It just sort of lost its excitement over time. I still enjoyed the book don’t get me wrong, but it was far from amazing. Nevertheless, I love this world that Showalter has created, and all that comes with it. I will most certainly be reading book three soon.

Read Lifeblood now.

“Utterly unique and absolutely riveting—I couldn’t put it down! What a marvelously cool world.” —Sarah J. Maas, New York Times bestselling author, on Firstlife

EXCERPT:

The identity of our intruders clicks. Two Troikan Generals: Shamus Campbell and Luciana Rossi. Behind them, four Laborers I’ve never met. A total of six invaders.

6: symbolizes beauty and high ideals. The sixth sense: ESP. The sixth astrological sign in the Zodiac: Virgo.

Focus! A soft pitter-patter of footfalls echoes outside the cave. More TLs?

Killian isn’t safe.

Panic claws its way up the ridges of my spine, and my blood f lash-freezes. I strain with all my might, desperate to move, but my body refuses to cooperate. Every attempt to raise my arms threatens to pop my shoulders out of joint. I don’t care. Nothing will halt my efforts.

“Kill, kill.” Between each command—desire?—Killian snarls like a wounded animal. “Kill!”

Shamus, a big, barrel-chested redhead with pale skin and countless freckles, slams a fist against his armor-clad chest to gain my attention. His dark eyes are narrowed, a muscle jumping in his jaw. “What did you do, Miss Lockwood? And do no’ tell me nothin’.” His accent is similar to Killian’s.

Luciana, a slender brunette with lovely brown skin and startling gray irises, backs away from me, horror contorting her expression. “I’ll tell you what she did. She doomed us all.”

Doomed…

Is she right? She can’t be. She just can’t.

I look down at Killian. My new husband is pulling at hanks of his hair.

Hopes, falling from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.

“Out,” Shamus snarls at the TLs. “Now.”

All four soldiers rush from the cave without protest.

I stiffen. The General has evened the odds. Two against two. A foolish move for a war-seasoned veteran. Unless he got rid of any witnesses…

Willing to use my body as a shield, I push through the pain—snap. My shoulder does pop out of joint. Or maybe back into joint. Air wheezes from my lungs. Worth it! Finally, I can move. I crawl toward Killian, every inch I gain only adding fuel to an already blazing fire of agony.

Can’t stop. No, won’t stop. Determination drives me. I only wish it gave me wings.

“Kill. Must kill.” Killian is lost in a world of his own.

“You won’t be killing anyone, you son of a Myriad troll.” With a hand curled around the hilt of a sword, Shamus stalks toward him.

“Stop! He doesn’t know what he’s saying right now.” My voice is barely audible, my gaze locked on my love. So close, yet so far away. Desperation slams a spike straight through my heart.

Any other day, I would have used the comm built into the forearm of spirit and Shell. With the press of a few buttons, it could transport me to Killian’s side and, as long as some part of me is touching some part of him, whisk us both somewhere else. Somewhere safe. Like a fool, I disabled the device to hide from fellow Troikans while meeting with Killian.

I should have known they’d find me one way or another.

“Stop,” I repeat, even as I gain another inch. “That’s an order.” As a Conduit, I outrank the Generals. As a newbie to the Everlife, however, my exalted rank doesn’t really mean squat.

“We can’t hurt him,” Luciana grates. She extends her arm, stopping Shamus in his tracks. “You’ve effectively tied our hands, Miss Lockwood.”

Though the shadows are no longer slithering through my mind, I’m not exactly thinking straight. I struggle to make sense of her words, finally throw in the towel. “I don’t understand.”

“You bonded to him, did you not?” She spits the words, as if they taste foul in her mouth. “That bond forces us to spare Myriad’s favorite butcher and watch as you, one of only two Conduits, slowly descends into madness.”

Review: Firstlife (Everlife #1) by Gena Showalter

25785357

Goodreads Summary:

ONE CHOICE.
TWO REALMS.
NO SECOND CHANCE.

Tenley “Ten” Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl…who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she’ll live—after she dies.

There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she’s drawn to isn’t home to the boy she’s falling for? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…

My Review

Gena Showalter strikes again! Firstlife packs a punch in every thrilling page! It is beyond anything I’ve ever encountered before, and left me reeling as the plot progressed.

Tenley or Ten has been locked away in an asylum by her very own parents for refusing to pick the place where she will go when she dies. And I’m not talking about Heaven or Hell folks. I’m talking Myriad and Troika, two very different place with very different beliefs who have been at war with one another for as long as anyone can remember. One place made of light and one of darkness, each side is aiming to gain the most souls toward their fight. Ten is one of the few “unsigned.” If she doesn’t pick a side before she dies, then she will spend her “second life” in Many Ends: a hellish dimension filled with unknown tortures.  Fortunately for her, she has two beautiful boys, one from Myriad and Troika to help make her decision all the more frustrating and confusing.

Firstlife consisted of nonstop suspense coupled with plenty of romantic implications that left me feeling baffled as to which guy/place Ten should choose. My heart and mind were at war with one another in the same way they were within Ten. I really felt like I was struggling to make the same decision she was! There was not a single slow moment in this book, and the emotions were everywhere; I could barely keep up sometimes.

The concept of life and death are very loose terms in this story. Nothing is what it seems. The overall concept is unique and riveting leading to an unpredictable plot.  And did I mention how awesome the characters are? Showalter has such a knack for creating strong female leads. Ten is a headstrong badass, and will do anything to take care of others. She adapts to each situation that is thrown at her and takes it down.

So much happened in book one, yet there is still so much that needs to be addressed. I was left hanging by the end of Firstlife and absolutely NEED to know what’s coming next!! The sequel (to my utter dismay) does not come out until next year!!

If you are in need for a new scifi-romance with an epic twist, then you should not hesitate to read Firstlife! Buy it on Amazon here!
