CAN’T HARDLY BREATHE Synopsis:

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with an irresistible Original Heartbreakers story about a woman who’s never felt desired and the man who wants her more than air to breathe…

Bullied in high school, Dorothea Mathis’s past is full of memories she’d rather forget. But there’s one she can’t seem to shake—her longstanding crush on former Army Ranger Daniel Porter.  Now that the sexy bad boy has started using her inn as his personal playground, she should kick him out…but his every heated glance makes her want to join him instead.

Daniel returned to Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma to care for his ailing father and burn off a little steam with no strings attached. Though he craves the curvy Dorothea night and day, he’s as marred by his past as she is by hers. The more he desires her, the more he fears losing her.

But every sizzling encounter leaves him desperate for more, and soon Daniel must make a choice: take a chance on love or walk away forever.

My Review:

Can’t Hardly Breathe was a lovely endearing story of two vastly different people falling for one another. Though it certainly had its cheesy moments, the overall story was utterly sweet and enjoyable.

Can’t Hardly Breathe follows the two perspectives of Dorothea and Daniel, two people who knew each other in high school briefly but rarely crossed paths, only enough for Dorothea to fantasize about him. Now years later, Daniel happens to be a regular guest at her family inn. Dorothea of course is still infatuated with him, but is hesitant to mix with the big time playboy. Daniel seems to be unexpectedly taken with her however, and they soon find themselves playing a game of cat and mouse as they each try to deny their growing feelings for one another.

This book was steamy to say the least, it was full of great banter and beautiful romantic moments. There was definitely a tug of war going on between the main characters that got super frustrating at times. I could see each perspective of the argument, but I also disagreed with multiple points as well. I think that if anything, this book proved that love is worth fighting for no matter the cost. Sappy I know.

All of the characters in this book were varied and I appreciated seeing the aspects of the impact that being in the military can have. I liked seeing how Daniel’s personality meshed with Dorothea’s, they both were exactly what the other needed. They instilled confidence and trust in one another, making the other a better person overall. The story showed the ups and downs of any relationship and proved that real outshines any  disagreement.

If you’re looking for a good romance to get your heart pounding, then I would definitely recommend Can’t Hardly Breathe!

Excerpt:

Hands trembling, she hooked the vacuum to the cart and rolled the cargo to the supply room…where her
younger sister Holly was smoking a cigarette.
Coughing, Dorothea claimed the cigarette and stubbed the tip into an ashtray.
“Hey!” Eighteen-year- old Holly glared at her. “I wasn’t done.”
“You mean you weren’t done giving our guests lung cancer and stinking up the inn?”
“Exactly.” Ever the smart aleck, Holly tossed a piece of gum in her mouth and popped a bubble in
Dorothea’s face. “Besides, we don’t really have guests, now, do we? Since you took over, only four people
have stayed here. Mayor Trueman and his side slice, and Daniel Porter and whatever bimbo he happens to be
banging.”
Not true! A few months ago, Dorothea had hired Harlow Glass, and everyone in town had rented a room to
witness the former bully’s downfall.
Good times.
Dorothea hadn’t wanted to like Harlow, but dang it, something bad had happened to the girl in the years since
high school, and she’d changed. More than that, Harlow had done everything in her power to make amends,
and eventually Dorothea had warmed up to her.
Now the beautiful brunette was married to reformed playboy Beck Ockley. The happy couple were
expecting their first child in a few months.
A razor-sharp pang cut through Dorothea. Won’t think about my own—
Nope. Slam the breaks.
To ward off the oncoming pity party, she drew in a deep breath…slowly released it… Good, that was good.
She focused on her sister. Holly had pinned back the sides of her jet-black hair, the remaining locks
tumbling all the way to the metal links anchored around her biceps. She’d paired a crimson corset top—her
first pop of color in months—with a ruffled black skirt, ripped fishnet stockings and combat boots caked with
mud Dorothea would have to clean from the floors.
In a town as small as Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, Holly was a legend. Unique.
“My inn, my rules,” Dorothea said. “No smoking. Ever.” Besides, she suspected the teenager only ever lit
up to aggravate her. Not once had Dorothea witnessed an actual puff.
“You’re worse than a Mogwai that’s been fed after midnight.”
A Gremlins reference? Seriously?
“No wonder Jazz left you,” her sister added.
Air hissed between her teeth. Holly might hate her guts, but the teenager loved to insult her, and this barb
hit harder than most.
Rather than waiting for love, as Dorothea had dreamed, she’d settled for companionship, marrying the first guy
to pay attention to her. Worse, she’d believed his words rather than his actions. I adore you and only want
what’s best for you…for us.

Review: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

18692431

Goodreads Summary:

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

My Review

Everything, Everything was a surprisingly refreshing contemporary romance! I thoroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover!

I had seen this book all over bookstagram for months before I saw the movie trailer for the first time and realized what it was about. It seemed sweet and endearing, although I had a feeling about the direction the story was going to go in.

Everything, Everything follows the life and perspective of Madeline, a girl with a rare disease that requires her to never step outside for fear of it causing her body to shut down and kill her. She is resigned to her fate, that is until the day that Ollie moves in next door. She can’t help but feel drawn to him, and what starts out as a simple fascination grows into a real connection when they begin to speak over the internet. Soon she finds herself falling for him no matter how much she knows it’s doomed to fail.

As circumstances progressed, I couldn’t help but wonder how the author was going to play this out. Obviously the story could go one of two ways. Fortunately, and also unfortunately, the main plot twist is one I predicted from the very beginning. Though I was not a fan of the predictability, that did not stop me from feeling satisfied with the overall turn of events. The story was fast paced, the characters were absolutely lovely, and the style of writing was wholly unique. I listened to it on audiobook which was a little bizarre for the way it was written, but it still worked, and I found myself utterly gripped by the story.

I loved the writing in this book, and the characters stole my heart. I would most definitely recommend reading Everything, Everything. Especially if you are looking for a heartwarming contemporary read! I can’t wait to see the movie now, I just hope it lives up to expectations.

Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

16068905

Goodreads Summary:
Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan…

But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words… And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

My Review

I have been meaning to read Fangirl since I discovered the title years ago when it first came out. I mean a book titled Fangirl? The very thing I epitomize, I had to get my hands on it! I bought it over the summer and here I am months later and I can’t believe I hadn’t read this little wonder sooner!

I related to Fangirl on almost a cellular level! Which might be kind of sad depending on how you look at it, I mean I am definitely not as socially awkward or introverted as Cath but I definitely felt like we were kindred  spirits when it came to certain characteristics. Rowell created a character who was so very aware of her vulnerablity but was still proud of who she was. She embraced her nerd on all platforms and was happy to show it. The story follows Cath as she enters college with her twin sister but must come to terms with the fact that her sister whom she’s shared everything with since birth is growing in a very different direction than she is. She is thrown into an atmosphere that is totally alien to her and she must adapt in the only way she knows how which is to further embrace her introversion.

Cath’s experiences and reactions were so heartfelt, and even though this story isn’t entirely fast paced, I found myself consumed by the content. The characters just felt so real, and the situations got to me. I had to make sure that Cath was going to be okay with so many new developments. I wanted to see her succeed, and most importantly, I wanted to see her relationships blossom. Fangirl is a beautiful coming of age story that spoke volumes to me and made me reflective. Rowell wrote so many amazing lines, that had me putting down the book to just contemplate what she said.

If you are looking for a lovely contemporary romance or college coming of age story, then I would most definitely recommend you reading Fangirl! Buy it on Amazon here!

I was dating Grennan Larter. The Grennan Larter, lead singer and guitarist of The Rising Sun. It had happened so fast, but somehow, plain old Brooklyn Cooper had captured the rock star. It was wonderful and fun; he was caring, attentive, and as cliché as it was, he thought I was the rising sun … and setting sun, and everything in between. I was in love and so was he.
And then it all fell apart.

All I thought I knew … well … let’s just say I wasn’t sure I could trust myself anymore. I had a war waging in my head, and I wasn’t sure who would win, or rather, who I wanted to win. I felt like I was going crazy. And then it all finally clicked. I finally understood why my life had gone in the direction it had. It was the shape of my life.

DC Renee is a financial analyst by day, and an indie author by night. She’s been writing since she was a child, from poems to short stories, even fan fictions. She published her first book in March of 2014, and it hit the Amazon top 100 list in Contemporary Romance Fiction several times. Naturally, she loves to read! She also loves spending time with her hubby and their new baby girl, as well as her immediate family (in-laws included!). She speaks Russian fluently, and it might come with the territory, but she loves watching hockey. Go Kings! DC is really thankful for all the support she receives from her family, friends and most of all her readers and fans. She hopes you enjoy her books as much as she enjoys writing them.

Review: Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

18296030

Goodreads Summary:

Samantha is a stranger in her own life. Until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie, everyone said Sam had it all-popularity, wealth, and a dream boyfriend.

Sam has resurfaced, but she has no recollection of who she was or what happened to her that night. As she tries to piece together her life from before, she realizes it’s one she no longer wants any part of. The old Sam took “mean girl” to a whole new level, and it’s clear she and Cassie were more like best enemies. Sam is pretty sure that losing her memories is like winning the lottery. She’s getting a second chance at being a better daughter, sister, and friend, and she’s falling hard for Carson Ortiz, a boy who has always looked out for her-even if the old Sam treated him like trash.

But Cassie is still missing, and the facts about what happened to her that night isn’t just buried deep inside of Sam’s memory-someone else knows, someone who wants to make sure Sam stays quiet. All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on. But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive?

My Review

This is the first contemporary book I’ve read by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and also the second audiobook I’ve listened to! I definitely enjoyed Don’t Look Back from start to finish! The plot was gripping and held my attention constantly, there were just so many questions that I needed the answers to!

Don’t Look Back focuses on the life of Samantha who was found bloodied and beaten after being missing for days with no memory of who she is or what happened to her. All she knows is her supposed best friend is still missing and someone else took part in what happened to her. Now she must rely on the help of friends and family to reveal the truth, but when she begins to remember more, she quickly learns who is friend and who is foe.

There were plenty of plot twists that I did not see coming in this book. It was so different to experience from a narrator with no memories of her past. It was like discovering a life alongside the character. Speaking of characters, all of them were varied and added depth to the story. Each one had me questioning who the culprit was throughout. And trust me when I tell you that it’s definitely not who you think it is! By the time the ending came around, I was on the edge of my seat and in shock!

Don’t Look Back was a great stand alone, but I would expect nothing less from Jennifer L. Armentrout! I would recommend this book to any JLA fan out there, and to any one who enjoys contemporary romance/thrillers!

I turn and see HIM, I realise he is the one watching me. I don’t know why I don’t feel creeped out, but I don’t. I put a towel around me and find myself walking towards him. I need to know who he is.

The closer I get to him the more of him I can see. He is in his swim shorts and no top. His body is so beautiful. All I can do is look into his eyes, they are the most beautiful blue colour. They are turquoise and are like pools that are drawing me in.

“Hi” I say, trying not to blush “I’m …”

“Cassie” he says. “I know who you are, I was hoping to bump into you tonight. I’m Jordan,” he says with the biggest and brightest grin I’ve ever seen.

“Hi Jordan. Why were you hoping to bump into me?” I stupidly say to him. He’s making me lose control of myself. I feel really nervous and look down at the floor.

“Erm I wanted to get to know you. I feel like I’m drawn to you for some reason. I know that sounds stupid, but everywhere I look I can only see you.” He puts his finger under my chin and makes me look into his eyes. “Even when I have my eyes closed, all I can see is you. Sorry if that sounds a bit stalkerish.” He laughs, but I can see that he’s embarrassed about showing me his feelings.

I laugh with him because I really don’t know what to say. I have to try and say something though because he is looking at me with those mesmerising eyes. “Yeah it does sound a bit stalkerish,” I laugh. “But I’m flattered and yes, I have seen you around at school and I did wonder who you were too. So we are both a bit stalkerish.” We both start laughing.

“I’m going to go and dry off and get some more clothes on. Then maybe we can grab a drink,” I say really quickly so Jordan doesn’t see I’m waffling on a bit. He is making me nervous but I don’t want to stop talking to him. I turn and walk back into the house, towards the stairs to go upstairs to the bedroom to find my dress. I can feel him following me and I smile to myself. I am a little bit nervous though that I am in the house with him and my friends are outside, but he makes me feel safe.

“That’s sounds great, although I don’t mind if you don’t put anymore clothes on” he says grinning at me. He is following closely behind me, I was right.

“No, seriously I would feel better if I had more clothes on.” I laugh as I’m heading up the stairs.
