BLURB:

Power is a strange and broken thing.

He was the sun god, the god of healing and song.

And prophecy.

Apollo has lived alone for centuries, content to spin out the years wandering a new and strange world, lost in the past and endless versions of the future. He has cut all ties with the remains of Olympus and his power, and hidden himself in humanity.

His twin thinks he’s depressed, spending his time in coffee shops, hospital waiting rooms, and concert halls…and nothing matters. Not really.

Until her.

Iris. With her teasing mouth and soulful music and eyes that remind him of the past.

He can’t resist her smile.

A girl as wild as he was, once, with a poet’s tongue and the body of a siren, who for one night makes him forget all the years and everything he gave up.

And he can’t stop fate.

Gods knows he’s tried.

He can’t help taking her.

Even if he knows better.

When Iris wakes up screaming, caught up in visions of the future, Apollo realizes that he didn’t leave his power quite as far behind as he thought.

He’s the god of prophecy and he’s been running from it, for centuries.

Iris is everything he has to avoid.

Now he has a furious Oracle on his hands, his sister trying to fix him, and someone is killing the gods.

It’s not just his tenuous sanity that hangs in the balance this time.

It’s all of Olympus.

Godhood really wasn’t supposed to be this hard.

My Review

When I read that Broken God’s main character was Apollo I got really excited! I had never seen a mythological fiction book focused on the god of the sun! It’s just very unheard of!  The concept sounded awesome!

Apollo was a very confusing narrator to follow, I mean it says it in the title, he’s “broken” so he’s basically insane. It took me a while to pick up on the way the book was written. So much of it consists of flashbacks of past memories. It was hard to keep track of at times. The flashbacks were definitely interesting and added more depth and mystery to the story. Apollo is a very layered character and is all together different from any other narrator I’ve encountered.

The storyline itself is structured very differently, you have to pay close attention to who is who. And the romance was hot and crazy let me tell ya! Though there wasn’t necessarily a whole lot of build up for it (the lust came pretty fast) it made sense based on who the characters were and how the story needed to unfold.

Furthermore, it was super intriguing to see the Gods of Olympus in such a new light. They seemed a lot more “human” relatable and un-godlike if I really had to put a word to it. It made their interactions super entertaining. As their actions brought about the conclusion, I couldn’t help but feel that it was a little rushed. I would have loved to have been given a  bit more detail as to how everything really happened. I’m unaware as to whether not Broken God is a stand alone. I could most definitely see there being more books in the series. I really hope this isn’t the end of Apollo’s story. However, the book did not end on a cliffhanger, so it is possible that it does end there, which is at least with a satisfying conclusion.

If you are a mythology junky and would like to see a new take on the story of Apollo, then I would most certainly recommend you read Broken God.

I just shake my head, I don’t want to get into this here. “Don’t Sawyer, please.”

“I don’t understand. I thought …. I thought we had a connection, something more than that!”

Christopher starts to laugh. He grabs me by my waist and pulls me closer to him. “You thought she had feelings for you … didn’t you? You are a complete fool, taken in by a bit of pussy. I am going to live on this one for weeks.”

I can’t believe he is being so cruel to Sawyer, did he really have feelings for me? I look at him and beg him with my eyes to help me. Then I look back at the floor and ignore everyone.

Christopher is still talking to Sawyer, “I think it’s time to leave this party, Whiskey. Although I’m having so much fun, I think I would much prefer to sink my cock in your pussy.” He pulls me to turn and start walking off.

Sawyer reaches out and pulls me away from Christopher and then he punches him in the face. I scream, Tilda screams and the bouncers come running.

“Excuse me gentlemen, can you please sort out your differences outside.”

“Don’t worry WE were just leaving.” Christopher takes my hand and drags me to the lift, which just happens to be free and as soon as he is inside he slams his fist into the button, the door closes as I see Sawyer coming towards it.

“Well that was a really interesting night Whiskey. Your pussy has had a lot of attention tonight and I haven’t even started with you.”

“I’m not going to sleep with you Christopher.”

“Yes, you are!”

“No, I don’t have to, it’s my prerogative.” I cross my arms.

He pushes me against the back of the lift, and grabs my chin to hold it in place. “You’re prerogative went out of the window sweetheart when I found out you slept with HIM. Whore!”

He tries to kiss me, I bite his lip, It only seems to turn him on more. I try to push him off me, “Get off me Christopher.”

He starts laughing like a maniac and I start to get really scared. All the customers are vetted by Kings X Companions so we don’t come across any weirdo’s – I wonder how he slipped though the net. I can’t wait to speak to Marcia ? tomorrow and make sure he can’t hire anyone else.

“I’ll find my own way home,” I say as we get out of the lift. I try pulling my arm away from him.

“You’re very funny! I paid for company for tonight, I haven’t even started yet. Then I want to see you being a whore and only then will I think about letting you go home. Only think about it mind you.”

I can hear myself screaming at him. “You’re a fucking psycho Christopher. If I don’t go home, then Tilda will know who I’m with. She knows I don’t want to go home with you already, so she WILL be watching out for me.”

“Shut up, bitch.” He drags me to a waiting car. I start to feel a bit sick and dizzy. He opens the door and pushes me inside.

“What the fuck man?” Some guy says as he gets in beside me and slams his door.

“Sorry, there was an opportunity and I took it. She won’t remember you don’t worry. I slipped something in her drink earlier. Should give us time to get her to the farm.”

“But C, we didn’t agree to this. We talked about it, fantasised about it, but we never agreed to it.”

“Stop moaning and man up T. This is happening and it’s happening now.” His voice is getting really slurry, I can’t quite make out what he is saying.

I close my eyes, I feel so tired. I don’t want to be here. I want to be tucked up at home in my own bed. I can’t hear him talking anymore … it’s dark …

About Krissy V Banner

I am a mother to two young children, who in turn keep me young. I live in Dublin, Ireland but, I’m originally from South Devon in the UK. I work full time in a pharmacy and write in all my spare time: in my lunch hour, when watching TV at night and anywhere. I have always been interested in reading from a young age and then 2 years ago I was given a kindle as a present and it was the best thing that happened to me. I was able to read lots of books every week and then I started to write reviews for all the books I read. I took this one step further and started my own facebook page – Sparkling Pink Bookshelf. I intended to upload all of my reviews for the books I read. This was purely for pleasure and then I answered a post on Facebook for someone to read for reviews and thought I had died and gone to heaven. I was reading about 7/8 books a week, the kindle made this achievable. I would read at any opportunity I could, even staying up til the small hours to finish a book. I loved it. Then one day I was asked to beta read a book – I loved this side of it, it was so exciting. I have worked with a number of indie authors and have remained loyal to a few select authors and I beta read all their After a year or more of doing this, I thought maybe I could write some of the stories that were in my head and I just decided to write and see what happened. I wrote about 70% of a story and then saw a post for the NaNoWriMo competition – to write 50,000 words in 30 days, I decided that this was a challenge I wanted to take and the Til Death Us Do Part series was born.

I am always thinking of situations that can be turned into a story and have started a few stories, which in turn will be completed and released to my readers. I love to hear what my readers have to say about my work and please find my links below.

Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy this series of books as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Review: The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobbs

28695340

Goodreads Summary:

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Revolution, and featuring a cast of iconic characters such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette, The Hamilton Affair tells the sweeping, tumultuous, true love story of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, from tremulous beginning to bittersweet ending—his at a dueling ground on the shores of the Hudson River, hers more than half a century later after a brave, successful life.

Hamilton was a bastard son, raised on the Caribbean island of St. Croix. He went to America to pursue his education. Along the way he became one of the American Revolution’s most dashing—and unlikely—heroes. Adored by Washington, hated by Jefferson, Hamilton was a lightning rod: the most controversial leader of the American Revolution.

She was the well-to-do daughter of one of New York’s most exalted families—feisty, adventurous, and loyal to a fault. When she met Alexander, she fell head over heels. She pursued him despite his illegitimacy, and loved him despite his infidelity. In 1816 (two centuries ago), she shamed Congress into supporting his seven orphaned children. Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton started New York’s first orphanage. The only “founding mother” to truly embrace public service, she raised 160 children in addition to her own.
With its flawless writing, brilliantly drawn characters, and epic scope, The Hamilton Affair will take its place among the greatest novels of American history.

****I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an Honest Review****

My Review

I have to be honest and say that when I first began this book I was a little hesitant. American historical fiction is never my first choice when choosing my next read. However, I was very curious to gain further understanding  about all the hype surrounding The Hamilton play. I realize the two things are very different from one another (I honestly can’t figure out how you make it a musical but whatever).  I’m definitely glad I read it, but I can’t necessarily say that I loved the experience.

As I said, I’m not big on American History, I don’t hate it, but it was never my preferred “era” to learn about in school. The Hamilton Affair is written in chronological order and alternates perspectives between Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schulyer. One of things I really appreciate about the book is the way Cobbs discreetly squeezed in historical events from the American Revolution in between telling the story of the lives of these two very different people. Keeping that in mind, and based on the way the book was structured, at times it felt more as if I was reading a timeline rather than an actual story, especially because half the chapters had larger time gaps in between them then others. I admit, I was more intrigued by Eliza’s perspective than Alexander’s, probably because he does something ( I won’t spoil it for you) that I was super pissed about!

The romance between Elizabeth and Hamilton was definitely my favorite part of the book, there were some really sweet moments between them. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a whole lot of time spent that included both of them being in the same place, but I think that their individual experiences were needed to be told separately in order for the point to be made. I really felt like I was immersed in their heads and in the world of the revolution. Cobbs did a splendid job of accomplishing that. Even though I knew how the story was supposed to end based on US History, I wasn’t nearly as prepared for it as I thought I would be based on previous events that occurred just before the final chapter.

I appreciated The Hamilton Affair, and I think if I was a big history buff I would have really enjoyed it. Therefore, I would most definitely recommend reading it if you are a fan of the play (though I have not seen it) or if you are a fan of American History books.

The Hamilton Affair releases August 2nd (tomorrow)! Pre-order it on Amazon here!

Review: One Child by Torey Hayden

415hjgvNdaL

Blurb on One Child (was not able to find a good summary off of Goodreads)

Sheila came into Torey Hayden’s class for “special children” at the age of 6 after having tied a 3-year-old child to a tree and critically burned him.

ONE CHILD is Torey Hayden’s story of her attempt to tap the unbelievable capacity of this tortured child.

Parts of this book – the savage sexual molestation – will enrage you. Parts of this book – Sheila’s quiet description of her anger and fears and doubts – will make you cry. And parts of this book – Sheila’s gradual realization of her own potential – may make you cheer.

Whatever your reaction, I think you will agree that it has been a long time since you have read a book with the sheer emotional impact of ONE CHILD

New York Times Book Review

My Review

One Child tells the heartbreaking yet devastatingly beautiful story of a teacher’s journey as she struggles to save a child from the darkness that surrounds her. The story is written by the teacher herself Torey Hayden as she first encounters a very special 6 year old girl who has been the victim of many horrors in her short life. Together they both grow in their understanding of one another as they face the trials that come from abuse.

This book is not to be taken lightly, the events in this story felt so very real, yet at the same time I found myself thinking: “no way this possibly happened, this is too horrible.” I had to remind myself that the events in this book had indeed happened, and the people were also quite real. Reading One Child both restored and dampened my faith in humanity at the same time. Torey Hayden has a beautiful style of narration and a wonderful way of painting her views about the world. She has a unique and relatable perspective on human nature that made me stop and think as I read so many of her profound lines.

One Child is a must read for anyone and everyone. It places great perspective on the lifestyles of those with mental disabilities, or those who have suffered from abuse and neglect. Furthermore, it exemplifies how selfless those who work with such affected people truly are. I would definitely recommend reading this lovely and touching story if only to gain a new view on something that so many of us are ignorant of.

Excerpt:

Katarina wasn’t afraid of Baden. Not anymore.

He took a step to the side, intending to move around her. Oh, no. She flattened her hands on his shoulders, keeping him in place.

“I want to know what’s wrong with you.” She said. “Tell me.”

He snapped his teeth at her in a show of dominance. “You think you want to know my problem. You’re wrong.”

Her tone dry, she said, “I’m so glad you know my mind better than I do.”

“Very well. I need sex.” He threw the words at her as if they were weapons. “Badly.”

Whoa. Blindside!

Heart pounding, she jerked her hands away from him. “Sex…from me?”

“Yesss.” A hiss. “Only from you.”

Only. Amazing how one little word could send pleasure soaring through her, warming her. “You told me never to touch you.” Which she’d just done, she realized. My bad.

“I’ve changed my mind.” His gaze dropped, lingered on her lips.

Burning her… “But you and I…we’re a different species.” As if that mattered to her body. Gimme!

He took a step closer, invading her personal space.  “We’ll fit, I promise you.”

Tristo hrmenych! The raspy quality of his voice, all smoke and gravel…she shivered with longing. Must resist his allure.

But…but…why? Before she’d committed to Peter, she’d dated around, had made out in movie theaters, cars and on couches. She’d liked kissing and touching and “riding the belt buckle,” as her friends had called it. Then, after committing to Peter, she’d gifted him with her virginity. At first, he hadn’t known what to do with her—he’d been just as inexperienced—and she’d left each encounter disappointed. When finally she’d gathered the courage to tell him what she wanted, he’d satisfied her well.

She missed sex. But connection…intimacy…she thought she missed those more.

The dogs barked, jolting her from her thoughts. They’d cleaned their food bowls, and now wanted to play. She clasped Baden’s hand to lead him out of the kennel. He jerked away, severing contact.

One action. Tons of hurt.

“I’m allowed to touch you and you want to have sex with me, but you’re still disgusted by me.” She stomped outside the kennel, done with him. “Well, I’m leaving. Good riddance! Your do-what-I-say-or-else attitude was annoying, anyway.”

He darted in front of her, stopping her. Breath caught in her throat as sunlight streamed over him, paying his chiseled features absolute tribute, making his bronzed skin glimmer.

So beautiful. Too beautiful.

“I’m not disgusted by you. You need me. I’ve come to accept it,” he admitted, looking away from her. “But being skin-to-skin with another is painful for me. We’ll have to proceed carefully. And you’ll get over your annoyance.”

Another order!  She would show him the error of his ways.

Review: Sweet Addiction: A Romantic Comedy by L.J. Scar

27427104

Goodreads Summary:

One skilled contractor. One novice real estate investor. One unrealistic time frame.

Beck’s business card motto is “Don’t worry; I’ll fix it.” He prides himself on his skills…especially with women. After filing permits for a new job, he becomes awestruck by an unusual beauty making a big mistake. When she has the highest bid on a sheriff’s auction foreclosure and becomes the new occupant of the house across the street from him, his abilities get put to the test.
Hayden’s job as the office lackey is less than gratifying. While filling in for the junior vice president on a property acquisition she gets outbid, and then finds herself the not so proud owner of fixer upper with a questionable past. Suddenly out of work, out of money, and down to her last candy bar, she must flip her first home in time to pay off a risky loan before interest starts accruing at a staggering rate.
She’s determined to do this on her own. He’s determined to help. As renovation turns into romance, things get fixed, things get broken, while hearts, heads and homes get flipped.

My Review

Sweet Addiction was an adorable romance filled with laughs and cute moments between two stubborn characters who are clearly perfect for each other. Recently fired Hayden finds herself in an even more difficult situation after impulse buying a major fixer upper. Fortunately for her, the sexy Beck lives across the street and is more than willing to help her flip her house. Both of them have an instant attraction, but events from Hayden’s past hold her back from divulging in her deeper desires.

Hayden’s character and extreme love for chocolate was so relatable for me! Her POV was cute and quirky and made for a great narrator. Though Beck’s feelings for her seemed to come on strong right off the bat, I still enjoyed reading his perspective and seeing him fall for her!

The story overall was charming and sweet, it was fast paced and filled with all the perks that every good romance has! There was bickering, bantering, fighting and almost break ups, cute family moments and a future fast forward epilogue. All loose ends were tied up and the conclusion left me completely satisfied! If you’re looking for a cute and easy going romance, then Sweet Addiction is the book for you!

EXCERPT:

Jessie Kay smiled, but the amusement didn’t last long. “You must hate that I’ve been with them.”

“I hate the thought of you with anyone else and for a while, I thought I’d grow to resent the two for putting their hands on my woman. But now I realize it simply doesn’t matter. They are the past, and I am the present.”

“Your woman,” she whispered, as if she couldn’t believe he’d said the words. “The future.” Gulping, she turned in her seat to fully face him. “How did Monica know you want to pretend I’m a human buffet?”

West gripped the steering wheel more tightly. “I told her.”

A moment passed in silence. A moment he lacked any kind of heartbeat, the stupid organ waiting for a reason to beat.

“I want you, too,” she admitted. “You know I do. But I won’t do anything about it because I expect long-term and you insist on two months.” A heavy pause. “Right?”

His body reacted to her words—I want you, too—growing hot and hungry, his heart now racing as an insatiable need for relief plagued him. “Right.” He couldn’t over look his reasons for keeping this particular schedule. Not even for Jessie Kay. It would be an insult to Jase and Tessa, even Beck. It would be an insult to the pain they’d suffered on his behalf.

“Why?” she asked. “Why do you insist on two months? Tell me. Please.”

“Not yet.” He’d have to tell her sooner or later, he saw that now, but as for tonight, there’d been enough turmoil. “If we can’t be together, you have to help me resist you. Tell me all the horrible things you’d do if we were involved. Cling? Demand to know every detail about my rotten childhood?”

For a long, silent moment, she peered at him with yearning and hope, and it tore him up inside. He didn’t think there could be anything worse—until both emotions were eclipsed by resolve.

“I would cling so hard,” she finally said. “I would ask a million questions about not just your childhood but your day, everyday, and if I thought, even for a second, you’d looked at another woman, I would punish you by refusing to sleep with you. For a week!”

“You mean you would punish yourself. But keep going. This is helping.” Was it though? He wasn’t disturbed by the thought of her questions and her punishment. He was intrigued.

“I would take horrible advantage of you,” she said.

Again, he was intrigued. “Give me an example.”

“Well, for starters, I would expect you to trade cars with me.”

“Why?”

“Because any boyfriend of mine would insist I drive the safer vehicle.”

Guess who would soon be getting a new—safer—car all her own?

But she wasn’t done. “And I hope you like your girlfriends in baggy shirts and sweatpants. The moment I have you nailed down,I’ll stop putting any effort in to my appearance.”

He gave a mock shudder.

“And despite your obvious aversion to gift-giving, I will expect a present for every anniversary. And,West? I believe every week together is a new anniversary.”

The thought utterly terrified him.

The one gift he’d given his mother, she’d pawned. The first gift he’d given to a foster mother hadn’t compared to the gifts she’d received from her own children. She’d proudly displayed theirs, and his—a drawing he’d slaved over—had ended up in the trash with the wrapping paper.

“Your turn to help me.” Jessie Kay waved her hand at him. “Tell me the horrible things you’d do to me.”

He brought her hand to his mouth, and licked between her knuckles. One taste. Just one…“I’d have a schedule drilled into your head by the end of the first day.”

“Nothing new there.”

“If you were a minute late to anything, I would pencil in a lecture and a spanking.”

Her exaggerated gasp caused his lips to twitch at the corners. She placed her free hand over her throat, saying, “You’re such a beast! Yes, I would deserve and welcome the spanking. But the lecture? Cruel and unusual. How long would it last?”

“Hours.”

She tsk-tsked. “I hate to break it to you, sugar bear, but I wouldn’t hear a word. I’d be too busy day dreaming about the joys of single life.”

“Don’t kid yourself, kitten. I’d deliver the lecture naked. You’d only want more of me, not less.”

Goosebumps broke out over her skin. “What else?”

“I would demand to be the center of your world.” He never had before, but with her, he was certain he’d make an exception. “Every minute of every day would be long to me. I would expect you in my bed every night and in my arms every morning. I would have you so often and so hard you wouldn’t be able to breathe without thinking of me.”

Another moment passed in silence. Another moment without a heartbeat.

He reached the house, parked in the driveway.

“Horrible,” she finally said, her voice little more than smoke—smoke that drugged him…lured him deeper into her spell.

He shook as he got out of the car, walked around and opened her door. “I need another reason. Now.”

She stood before him, looking up at him with luminous eyes. “I would demand a hug at least ten times a day.”

He didn’t have to fake a shudder this time. “I hate hugs. I never know how long or tight to hold on.”

“Well, I can fix that in a jiff.” She stepped closer to him, stepped into him, winding her arms around his waist and pressing her cheek against his chest, where his heart drummed a thousand beats a minute. “Hold on until I say stop.”

He obeyed without thought, wrapping his arms around her and clinging.

“Tighter,” she said. “Good. That’s good.” A tension-laden pause. “Miserable yet?”

“Beyond,” he whispered.

“Good. Now run your fingers through my hair.”

It was a dangerous game, the most dangerous one they’d ever played, and it utterly defeated the purpose of what they were trying to do. Still he ran his fingers through the silken strands of her hair, and she sighed with contentment.

“Jessie Kay.” A heated rasp.

She looked up, pressed a gentle kiss into his lips.

The contact, even as brief as it was, obliterated whatever armor he’d had around his mind…his heart? His every hidden desire was suddenly on display, like exposed nerve endings, raw and sensitive.

Suddenly he couldn’t breathe. He lowered his head and pressed his lips against hers, stealing her breath when she opened for him.

Their tongues rolled together, soft and slow, and the incredible taste of her nearly unmanned him: the sugar that was a steady part of her diet laced with a hint of cinnamon. Two flavors he would forever associate with home…home…for the first time in his life, he felt as if he was home.

“Jessie Kay.” As good as the kiss was, it had nothing to do with passion. Not in this stolen moment. Every stroke and thrust somehow deepened the emotion between them. She branded him. She took him to a place where the past no longer existed. There was only here and now, and they were the only two people alive.

“West,” she gasped—then she pushed him away.

They stood at arm’s length, both of them panting.

Goal: Get her back in his arms. Without her, he had no anchor. He was set adrift, the past threatening to intrude.

He reached for her, but she sidestepped him. Can’t let her get away.

He caged her against the car to prevent an escape, and as she trembled, he cursed. He wasn’t this man. Needy and clingy—desperate.

“N-now that we got that out of our systems,” she said, unable to look him in the eye, “the wanting should end.”

“Yes,” he croaked. “The wanting should end.”

Please. Let it end.
