Review: Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

17788401

Goodreads Summary:

When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she knows it isn’t love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.

Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.

My Review

Believe it or not but this is actually the first ever Colleen Hoover book that I’ve read!! That is practically blasphemous I know! And boy oh boy do I see what I was missing out on now!! Holy crap this book was good!! Hoover has a way with romance novels, or so I had been told, and that is definitely no exaggeration. I’m actually going to her book signing event in two weeks in Phoenix and I am so so excited for it!

Ugly Love was entirely unique in that its two perspectives took place in two different timelines. One focused on the life of Tate, an RN who has just temporarily moved in with her brother while she gets her Masters and attempts to find an apartment of her own. The other perspective follows Miles (the boy in the apartment across the hall), only his perspective is one from 6 years in the past! Wild right?! Miles also happens to be one of Tate’s brother’s coworkers. He has always been aloof from love for reasons that very few are privy to. However, right from the start there is an attraction between Miles and Tate, and before they know it, they’re falling in to an intense yet tumultuous friends with benefits situation. Miles has two rules though, don’t ask about his past, and don’t expect a future.

The title of this book could not possibly be any more accurate! It was so very clear that the feelings between Miles and Tate were so much more than physical. Unfortunately for Tate, every time she tried to break through Miles walls, she was forcibly cast out. It was heartbreaking, and as time went on, I kept finding myself thinking, girl you deserve better, drop his ass, but then he would play mind games with her and she would go right back. It made sense really. And as events played out, and the truth was revealed, my heart utterly broke for Miles. He had every right to feel the way he did. He had every right to create a love that was so ugly with Tate.

This book brought forth all the feels at all the right times, and the ending absolutely brought me to tears. I could not have been more pleased. I had a wonderful first experience with a Colleen Hoover novel, and I can’t wait to get my hands on more!! I most definitely recommend you read this book!

EXCERPT:

He held the truck door for her, then circled around and climbed in. “Where to?”

“Somewhere quiet. I’ve been surrounded by people all day.”

“I agree. The house has been full of friends since I got Gram home. I managed to run most of them off early last night so she could sleep and again this afternoon to let Gram rest a few hours before the quilters swarmed in.”

He drove through the Hamburger Hut, picked up malts and burgers, then crossed the bridge to the old part of town. The boards over the water were uneven, rattling her from side to side like a cheap, twirling carnival ride.

Jillian raised her eyebrows but didn’t say a word. Where they were going didn’t matter. She was with the one she wanted to be with. She needed to stop worrying about lingering memories and just relax.

He parked by a three-story building and climbed out.

She waited, not sure what to do. The malts and burgers were still on the seat beside her. Surely they weren’t stopping here. This place was scary even in daylight. She didn’t plan on staying around to see how it looked in less than an hour.

When he opened her door, he raised his arms to catch her. “Come with me.” He encouraged as if offering far more than a lift down from the high seat.

Her legs were plenty long enough to take the step out, but she slid into his embrace. He lowered her to the ground. For moment they were so close they touched as they breathed. She thought he might lean in slightly and kiss her, but he simply brushed his cheek against her hair. “Trust me, Jillian, you’re going to like this restaurant.”

He grabbed his raincoat from behind the seat, handed her the drinks and picked up their meal.

Following him into the building, she was surprised to see how sound the old factory seemed to be. The ceiling was tall, over twenty feet. Decaying ropes still hung from pulleys, and worktables stood dusty, silently waiting for craftsmen to arrive. The windows were high, ribboning the building with natural light.

Staying close, she whispered as though she might disturb ghosts, “What did they used to make in here?”

“I’m not sure. I think parts of oil rigs were shipped in and assembled here. I don’t know much about it, but there’s an old Christmas tree over there in the corner.” He pointed to a six-foot structure that was formed from a mixture of valves, spools and fittings welded together.

“They’re used at oil or gas well sites. I see them in the oil fields around. I’m not really sure why they call them Christmas trees. A roughneck would have to be drunk to mistake this jumble of metal for a tree.”

She turned in a complete circle. “Nice restaurant.”

“Oh, we’re not there yet.” He pointed to a staircase along one wall. “We’ve got rooftop seating.”

Suddenly excited, she climbed ahead of him, her shoes tapping a rhythm in double time. At the top, she waited impatiently with a malt in each hand.

He juggled the bag of burgers as he shoved the heavy door open. They stepped onto the rooftop with no one else around. She could see for miles in every direction. The trees, the fields. Oil rigs, scattered homes and barns, schools and churches.

“It’s beautiful!” The sun’s low glow gave everything a golden light.

He set the bag down and spread his raincoat out like a tablecloth on an air vent cover. “It’s not yet, but it will be.” He pulled up two empty five-gallon buckets to use as stools.

She sat the malts down. “You’ve been to this restaurant before.”

“Guilty. But I’ve never brought anyone here. Only you.”

While he unwrapped his burger, she looked around, pointing out everything as if he was also seeing it for the first time. “Look how winding the creek is.”

“I had no idea there were so many trees.”

“Oh, look at those horses running.” She loved the way the evening clouds moved over the land, darkening the hues of the earth in shadow as they drifted.

“It’s winter now, not near as pretty as it’ll be come spring.” He set his hamburger beside hers and came to join her near the roof’s edge. “I lease that flat land out to a farmer who plants cotton every spring. That brown dirt will look like a green carpet in a few months.”

“I won’t be here in spring.” She let the wind catch her words as she turned away from him and the view. The black tar roof beneath her feet was all she saw now, but she stared hard, willing not one tear to fall.

This time. This place she would miss. When she left, Jillian knew memories would be packed in her heart. A year from now, a decade, a lifetime, she’d still remember the beauty of this view in winter and wonder how it looked in spring.

Review: Me Before You by JoJo Meyers

15507958

Goodreads Summary:

Louisa Clark is an ordinary young woman living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has never been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair-bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living.

A love story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

My Review

In a way I knew exactly what to expect from this book after seeing the trailer for the movie. I knew I would probably cry, and I knew that it would be as a result of feeling! I decided to listen to the audiobook to try to soften the emotional blow. Though I wasn’t as thoroughly impressed by the story as I thought I would be, I most certainly enjoyed it overall.

The story centers around the perspective of Louisa Clark, although it does cycle through a few other perspective at times. Louisa’s life is about as ordinary and uneventful as it can get. She never does anything exciting, and has been with the same man whom she clearly doesn’t love for seven years. When she gets fired from her job, she goes on the hunt for new work and finds herself with the new role as a caregiver for the quadriplegic Will Traynor. Their relationship starts out rocky to say the least, but as she learns more about his situation, she becomes determined to show him his life is worth living.

Louisa and Will’s interactions were so utterly frustrating and wonderful at the same time. They were two people that were brought together in the most unlikely of circumstances, and they couldn’t be more unalike. I was so completely heartbroken to see things pan out the way they did between them, but I was absolutely resigned to the fact that it had to end in such a way. The ending went against the norm for sure, and though it hurt my romantic heart, it was fitting for the story and truly lovely.

If you’re looking for a heartfelt romance, filled with beautiful characters and a story that makes you feel in new ways. Then I would most definitely recommend you read Me Before You.

EXCERPT:

“But… marriage? ”Lyndie asked. “I promised myself I’d never do the whole legal-ties thing again.” Straight white teeth nibbled on her bottom lip. “How long would our marriage last?”

“I don’t know exactly.” Anticipation blended with excitement, driving Brock mad in the best possible way. So close to victory! “I’ll need to find the employees of the Hud and Son Group new jobs before I dismantle the company. There will be no collateral damage on my watch.” The employees were innocent, and he wouldn’t leave them in the lurch. “If I had to guess, I’d say a month. Maybe two, but not likely.”

Her beautiful lips shaped the words, One month.

His father’s will had two stipulations: Brock had to be married in order to run the business and, if he planned to continue running it, he had to remain married.

Daddy Dearest had used the perfect bait. Miranda’s downfall. He’d known Brock would seethe as he imagined his mother rich, happy, and carefree.

What Brock hadn’t yet comprehended? Why his father cared about his relationship status at all. What made his father think a commitment would “bring him out of the darkness and into the light?”

Thankfully—and shockingly—there’d been no requirements for Brock’s wife. No “proper” pedigree. No reputation above reproach. No set family worth. The very requirements for the girls he’d dated in high school.

Little wonder he’d always gravitated toward wild, tattooed biker babes.

Lyndie was an anomaly, everything he’d never wanted but now had to have.

She gulped. “Would we live together?”

“Yes. For the sake of appearances, but also because your safety and peace of mind matter to me.” He would be on his best behavior. Would sidestep any conversations about the terrible things he’d done in the past. She would never know how much blood stained his hands. “I will continue to protect you from Rick Lambert. From anyone who threatens you.”

Her shoulders rolled in. “I’m a magnet for crazies, aren’t I?”

“Scottie, you’re a magnet, period.”

She drew in a deep breath, slowly released it. “I’m shocked to admit this, but I like the idea of having you here… which makes me not want to have you here. I can’t learn to rely on you. I must rely on myself.”

Craved her independence? “What if I promise not to ever cook your meals or clean the house or do anything gentlemanly?”

The corners of her mouth twitched. “That would help, yes.”

Closer still!

“We’d have to sleep in separate bedrooms though. I’m not going to get used to your warmth.” Twin pink circles stained her cheeks. A flush of embarrassment… or pleasure? “But, uh, just to be clear,” she said, and gulped, “you will want to have sex with me, yes?”

His excitement deflated. Did she not want to have sex with him? “Yes. I will. I do. I hope you’ll want to have sex with me.” Many times. Every night. “If you allow me into your bed, I will make your pleasure a top priority. But I will expect nothing, and I will never pressure you for something you aren’t willing to give. The money will be yours whether we sleep together or not.”

Her breath hitched. Her pupils grew, black spilling over amber. Her nails dug into her knees, as if… no way. As if she had to stop herself from reaching for him.

He went still. She wanted him. Lyndie Scott wanted him.

Do not pound your chest like a gorilla.

“I don’t want your money, Brock.”

Heart thudding against his ribs, he opened his mouth to tell her that he’d give her anything. If she wanted him to beg, he would beg. He had no pride. Not with her.

Shoulders squared, she added, “I want your sperm.”

Uh, what the what now? His brain short-circuited.

Groaning, she hunched over to anchor her elbows on her knees and cover her face with her upraised hands.

“I think I misheard you,” he rasped, but deep down realization had begun to click. Lyndie Scott had caught the baby fever. She might agree to marry him, but she expected a child in return.

My Review:

Can’t Hardly Breathe was a lovely endearing story of two vastly different people falling for one another. Though it certainly had its cheesy moments, the overall story was utterly sweet and enjoyable.

Can’t Hardly Breathe follows the two perspectives of Dorothea and Daniel, two people who knew each other in high school briefly but rarely crossed paths, only enough for Dorothea to fantasize about him. Now years later, Daniel happens to be a regular guest at her family inn. Dorothea of course is still infatuated with him, but is hesitant to mix with the big time playboy. Daniel seems to be unexpectedly taken with her however, and they soon find themselves playing a game of cat and mouse as they each try to deny their growing feelings for one another.

This book was steamy to say the least, it was full of great banter and beautiful romantic moments. There was definitely a tug of war going on between the main characters that got super frustrating at times. I could see each perspective of the argument, but I also disagreed with multiple points as well. I think that if anything, this book proved that love is worth fighting for no matter the cost. Sappy I know.

All of the characters in this book were varied and I appreciated seeing the aspects of the impact that being in the military can have. I liked seeing how Daniel’s personality meshed with Dorothea’s, they both were exactly what the other needed. They instilled confidence and trust in one another, making the other a better person overall. The story showed the ups and downs of any relationship and proved that real outshines any  disagreement.

If you’re looking for a good romance to get your heart pounding, then I would definitely recommend Can’t Hardly Breathe!

Excerpt:

Hands trembling, she hooked the vacuum to the cart and rolled the cargo to the supply room…where her
younger sister Holly was smoking a cigarette.
Coughing, Dorothea claimed the cigarette and stubbed the tip into an ashtray.
“Hey!” Eighteen-year- old Holly glared at her. “I wasn’t done.”
“You mean you weren’t done giving our guests lung cancer and stinking up the inn?”
“Exactly.” Ever the smart aleck, Holly tossed a piece of gum in her mouth and popped a bubble in
Dorothea’s face. “Besides, we don’t really have guests, now, do we? Since you took over, only four people
have stayed here. Mayor Trueman and his side slice, and Daniel Porter and whatever bimbo he happens to be
banging.”
Not true! A few months ago, Dorothea had hired Harlow Glass, and everyone in town had rented a room to
witness the former bully’s downfall.
Good times.
Dorothea hadn’t wanted to like Harlow, but dang it, something bad had happened to the girl in the years since
high school, and she’d changed. More than that, Harlow had done everything in her power to make amends,
and eventually Dorothea had warmed up to her.
Now the beautiful brunette was married to reformed playboy Beck Ockley. The happy couple were
expecting their first child in a few months.
A razor-sharp pang cut through Dorothea. Won’t think about my own—
Nope. Slam the breaks.
To ward off the oncoming pity party, she drew in a deep breath…slowly released it… Good, that was good.
She focused on her sister. Holly had pinned back the sides of her jet-black hair, the remaining locks
tumbling all the way to the metal links anchored around her biceps. She’d paired a crimson corset top—her
first pop of color in months—with a ruffled black skirt, ripped fishnet stockings and combat boots caked with
mud Dorothea would have to clean from the floors.
In a town as small as Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, Holly was a legend. Unique.
“My inn, my rules,” Dorothea said. “No smoking. Ever.” Besides, she suspected the teenager only ever lit
up to aggravate her. Not once had Dorothea witnessed an actual puff.
“You’re worse than a Mogwai that’s been fed after midnight.”
A Gremlins reference? Seriously?
“No wonder Jazz left you,” her sister added.
Air hissed between her teeth. Holly might hate her guts, but the teenager loved to insult her, and this barb
hit harder than most.
Rather than waiting for love, as Dorothea had dreamed, she’d settled for companionship, marrying the first guy
to pay attention to her. Worse, she’d believed his words rather than his actions. I adore you and only want
what’s best for you…for us.
