Some loves will last ’til your dying breath
Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.
Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.
Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…
After reading the mind blowing cliffhanger in Stone Cold Touch in which we find out that Sam had been the Lilin all along, I was more than ready to get my hands on the final book of the trilogy! More importantly, I was SO ready to find out who Layla chooses: Zayne or Roth!
In many ways Every Last Breath was a very satisfactory conclusion to The Dark Elements, however, I can’t help but feel slightly disappointed by certain plot elements. Don’t get me wrong, the action was almost instantaneous. I was glued to the content completely, as each page turned a new development was thrown at me. Layla was her usual badass self, and Roth was the ever devilishly handsome (pun intended) snarky hunk of man. Armentrout is the master of clever banter between her characters, and the banter between these two was oh so enjoyable! If you haven’t noticed, I’m TEAM ROTH! That being said… let me tell ya folks, the romance in this story was just to my liking and fully met my expectations! There was more steamy action than in the past books, and all romantic ends were tied up by the end of the story.
There were definitely some plot twists that I didn’t see coming in Every Last Breath, however, I can’t help but feel that certain aspects of the story were also pretty predictable. This didn’t take away from the book, but it was easy to see where the events were going once new information was given. The biggest thing I felt that I missed out on in the end, was a final epic battle between Layla and the Lilin. There really wasn’t much of one. Yes there were plenty of mini action sequences throughout the book, but I never got my big edge-of-my-seat-insane-fight-scene. The final conflict was resolved just a little too quickly for how much build up there was.
Overall, I enjoyed Every Last Breath and I loved The Dark Elements Trilogy, but it was lacking in certain ways that I wasn’t expecting it to. I loved the characters, I loved the story and I loved the romantic conclusion, I was just looking for a little extra “wabam” for what was the conclusion to a beloved series. I would of course still encourage everyone to read Every Last Breath and if you haven’t started The Dark Elements series to most definitely do so!
