Goodreads Summary:

Only a true best friend can protect you from your immortal enemies . . .

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires – the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.

After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger . . . and the Strigoi are always close by.

Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever . . .

My Review

I have been hearing about Vampire Academy for years now and have never gotten around to reading it until I found the first book at Goodwill at the beginning of Summer. I had high expectations for this book and was not disappointed!

Vampire Academy focuses on the life of Rose Hathaway, the guardian in training for her best friend Lissa whom she has a special connection with. When they are caught after running away from the academy and returned against their will; Lissa and Rose must then struggle to readjust to school life. Unfortunately, strange and foreboding events make that all the more difficult. As Rose trains to become a better guardian with the gorgeous Dimitri, she becomes a key role in saving the life of her best friend.

Rose was a badass female lead, one with snark and a confidence that kills! Her narration made the story all the more exciting and upbeat. The world that Mead created was a unique one. Though I’ve read plenty of vampire books, she found a way to make this one entirely different, using words/terms that I had never heard of before. The plot kept me glued the entire time and the ending was definitely unexpected.

Rose’s relationship with Dimitri is most certainly an unstable one, but I have faith for them yet! There is a beautifully steamy scene toward the end of the book that will make any girl’s toe curl. Unfortunately, by the very end I was left feeling super frustrated by the romance, but there is for sure hope! Though Vampire Academy didn’t end on a cliffhanger, I am so so eager to see what happens next! I would definitely suggest you read this series if you are into paranormal romance!
