Goodreads Summary:

Once, a hero arose to save the world. A young man with a mysterious heritage courageously challenged the darkness that strangled the land.

He failed.

For a thousand years since, the world has been a wasteland of ash and mist ruled by the immortal emperor known as the Lord Ruler. Every revolt has failed miserably.

Yet somehow, hope survives. Hope that dares to dream of ending the empire and even the Lord Ruler himself. A new kind of uprising is being planned, one built around the ultimate caper, one that depends on the cunning of a brilliant criminal mastermind and the determination of an unlikely heroine, a street urchin who must learn to master Allomancy, the power of a Mistborn.

My Review

Wow, there is so much that needs saying about this book! What a crazy, unique story?! Unfortunately, I took a much longer time to read Mistborn then I  had intended. I’ve now heard from multiple people that that isn’t the way to read it. In  order to fully appreciate how great this story is, I should have read it in a few good sittings. It took me over a week to read the book (it’s 643 pages). So naturally, I initially felt like the beginning was too slow and consisted of too much set up. It’s true, the first 200 pages or so essentially frame the story of whats to come. I understand that a lot of information was necessary in order to fully comprehend the rest of the events, but when you take too many days to read the beginning it ruins the enjoyment of it. Once I did get over that initial hump of dislike and started moving quickly through the content, I was hooked!!

The story is told from multiple third person limited perspectives, however the main focus is on Vin: a 16 year old girl who just happens to be a thief and a Mistborn. She has always known of her unique abilities but never truly understood the depth of her gifts until she meets Kelsier: a man with great power and a dark past that has him on a revenge warpath. Before she knows it, Vin becomes a key role in a rebellion that has the capacity to change the entire world.

Mistborn is a one of kind fantasy story filled with all the makings of what is sure to be a wonderful series. The characters are individually structured to suck you in and make you sympathize with each and every one. Vin and Kelsier are the main protagonists, but there are also so many others that play a key role in the succession of the story. You definitely have to pay real close attention while reading in order to keep up with it all.

Sanderson created a world that has never been seen before, with rules and creatures that are beyond imagination. The struggles that the characters undergo are vast and the emotion that is thrown at you is great. By the time the ending hit, I was dumbfounded by all that I had learned. Though the final events were great, there are still foreboding details that indicate that there is much more to come.

If you are looking for a new fantasy filled with suspense and a killer plot, then I would definitely recommend Mistborn. Buy it on Amazon here!
