Review: Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Goodreads Summary:

Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

My Review

After reading the absolutely terrible cliffhanger in Stone Cold Touch in which we discover the Lilin had been Sam all along, I was more than ready to read Every Last Breath. More importantly, I was ready to see who Layla finally chose: Zayne or Roth!!

Every Last Breath did not waste any time getting into gear! I was on the edge of my seat from the get-go! Layla was her usual badass slaying self, and Roth was just as devilishly (pun intended) handsome and smart-mouthy as ever! Armentrout is the master of witty banter between her characters, and that was definitely abundant in this book! I’m TEAM ROTH all the way and there were so many beautifully romantic moments that had me swooning all over the place!! I was so romantically content with Every Last Breath, though I wasn’t necessarily satisfied with all aspects of the novel.

Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, however, there were just a few minor disappointments…

Although there were some killer mini-action sequences throughout the story, when it came down to the final confrontation between Layla and the Lilin, it kind of fell short. I was expecting  an epic-nail-biting-insanity battle, and all of sudden it was over before I could even blink! Yes there were plenty of twists I didn’t see coming, but I would have liked certain moments in the story to have been extended whilst other parts could have been shortened. I was pleased with the way in which Armentrout went against the norm and with how she also took the time to tie up all loose ends.

Overall, I enjoyed The Dark Elements trilogy wholeheartedly! I felt  that I was 100% romantically content with the turn of events and love the ingenuity behind this story! I suppose I just expected a little more from the conclusion of what is a beloved series. I would definitely recommend The Dark Elements to any paranormal romance fan and to any Jennifer Armentrout fan!
