Goodreads Summary:

VAMPIRE’S BANE is a mature young adult paranormal fantasy/romance/action & adventure/post-apocalyptic story.

A lethal sword.

A dangerous mission.

A seventeen-year-old girl finding her way in a world that is nothing like she remembered.

When Maylin Kavanagh’s parents surrendered her to The Program, they swore it was for her protection. After being confined in a small underground cell for nearly two years, she is finally released.

But the world has changed.

Most of the populace has been wiped out by a deadly disease, and the rules of society have regressed. But that’s not the worst of it. When her group is kidnapped by a band of rogue vampires, Maylin realizes the decline of the human population has brought other races to the forefront—races she never knew existed. And now they’re all battling for survival and power.

In his father’s absence, Thane Warwick must lead his people. He has two priorities: find his father and find humans who can supply blood to his tribe. Immediately intrigued by his latest captive, he becomes interested in Maylin for more than just her blood, but he soon discovers that he must make a choice between his father and her.

Despite their attraction, Maylin and Thane each have an agenda, and only one can be the victor.

VAMPIRE’S BANE is the first book in the VAMPIRE’S BANE series. While it does end at a natural turning point in the heroine’s journey, it is an ongoing story, and not all questions will be answered. You will need to read this series in order.

My Review

Vampire’s Bane is unlike any vampire book you’ve read before! Maylin was put into “The Program” two years ago by her parents for reasons not quite known. What she does know, is that since that time a “dark pestilence” has ravaged the earth and she and her friends have been given a particular task as part of The Program to make it to St. Louis to meet with another group like hers. However, while on her way there, her group becomes captured by a rogue group of vampires. This new world they think they have been set free in quickly becomes their new prison as they must face what the apocalypse has wrought.

Maylin was definitley a lead character that I could appreciate! She never backed down from a risky situation, and easily slipped into the role of leader. Her escape into the world throws so much at her, and she easily adapts to it. This book messed with me as to who her romantic interest was, which was frustrating throughout. I couldn’t necessarily tell where her heart lied. Thane was different from any vampire I had read of before, but I enjoyed seeing those differences, cause boy let me tell you, a  supernatural twist gets thrown in that I was sooo not anticipating!! Though I felt like Maylin and Thane’s feelings for each other were a little under developed, I still liked where they were leading.

This book was a fast and easy read, filled with plenty of plot developments to leave me intrigued throughout. The ending was also extremely unexpected and also a little devastating. I can only hope that what happened is going to somehow be resolved and explained! I’m definitely interested to see what’s in store for Maylin and her friends. This was just the beginning of what is clearly going to be an action packed sequel! If you are looking for a new and unique supernatural apocalyptic book, then Vampire’s Bane is the one for you!
