Life for Kansas was perfect until the day the world changed.
She has been hiding out for four years in solitude. It’s the only way to survive. The only way not to draw the living dead. Helping a small group of people, she learns the new world might not be what she assumes. Venturing out of her refuge and comfort zone, she meets Rudy, who helps her find a greater purpose. She realizes that the world has moved on without her. Only it’s not what she expects. Her knowledge of the living dead grows and only makes her more curious as humanity continues to hang on by a thread. While on her search for answers she finds comfort in new friendships and love, but her past seems as if it will haunt her forever.
Kansas takes it upon herself to help other survivors, which would be easy if the famished were the only obstacles.
In a trilogy plot thick with twists and turns, this adult dark fantasy is emotional as much as it is horrifyingly gripping.

It was so refreshing to discover yet another fantastic zombie apocalypse series!! I thoroughly enjoyed Taking on the Dead! Kansas was one badass heroin! After living on her own for four years and being completely self-sufficient, she is totally unprepared to get back into the new world’s version of “civilization” and soon discovers that the walking dead surrounding her are evolving into much more sinister creatures. Along the way into her new life, she makes just as many allies as she does enemies and finds herself falling for the equally badass Rudy!
Taking on the Dead was easily unlike the typical zombie book! Well first of all, they aren’t even called zombies, they are known as “famished” or in some cases “putrids.” I commend Walls for finding ways to put her own ingenuity into the story! The action and suspense was nonstop! This book is most definitely not for the faint of heart, it’s pretty dark at times, and its definitely got some graphic violence that any Walking Dead watcher would appreciate! I couldn’t put the book down for a moment without being sucked right back into the gore and plot movement!
Kansas was a beautifully developed character, she never backed down from a fight and took each day in stride. Though I wouldn’t say I agreed with her romantic choices, I understood why she had to do what she did! Speaking of the romance…ughh it was so frustrating throughout! Her and Rudy are clearly perfect for each other, yet things continue to get in the way of them having a deeper relationship! However, revelations at the end of the book lead me to have hopes for the future!
Taking on the Dead is a must read for any zombie lover/apocalyptic fan! There was never a dull moment, and I can’t wait to continue the story with the sequel: Controlling the Dead!
