This is a stand alone novel that is an adult spin-off of the Lux Series You do not need to read a Lux book to read Obsession and vice versa.
He’s arrogant, domineering, and… To. Die. For.
Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.
Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something… unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.
Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?
Obsession is yet another Jennifer Armentrout book I’ve been meaning to read for over a year now. When I first learned that JLA was writing an Arum novel I was pretty intrigued. The Lux series “raised” me to view the Arum as the worst enemy out there and a great threat to the ever wonderful Daemon Black! But I knew that since it was a Lux spinoff I had to read it!
Obsession was a good read filled with a steamy/rough romance and a new plot that opened my eyes to who the true enemy is out there. Hunter is forced into protecting Serena after she witnesses proof of alien life (a Luxen) and learns some information from her best friend that she shouldn’t know about the Luxens’ plans. Their relationship starts off pretty rocky but as the two spend more time together an unstable attraction brews between the two one that could very well mean the death of Serena.
Obsession allowed me to see the Lux series from a new point of view. A view in which the Arum are just as much victims of circumstance as the Luxen. Not all of them are as they seem and they could very well prove to be allies in the final book of the Lux series titled Opposition. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS BOOK!!!! I read on JLA’s blog or Facebook (idk it was some form of social media) that Hunter and Serena will make an appearance of some sort in Opposition so that should be pretty awesome! At one point in Obsession the two worlds did collide and my inner fangirl had a heart attack!!
The only thing I wasn’t a big fan of in Obsession was the lack of plot movement. Don’t get me wrong, the story line was definitely good, but for a huge part of the book the main characters remained stationary. The romance was riveting but I just wanted the plot development to be an equal pair to the quality of the romantic buildup. The story did have some great moments of suspense, I was just expecting more of it from a Lux spinoff book. But oh well, Obsession is still worth reading for Lux fans, if only so they can be fully educated in all things Lux!
