Review: White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

17455585Goodreads Description:

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

I pre-ordered White Hot Kiss months ago, knowing right off the bat that I would love this series because: 1. It’s Jennifer Armentrout 2. It’s about a gargoyles/demons combo 3. I LOVE THE LUX SERIES SO I REMAIN LOYAL TO THIS AUTHOR. Needless to say, I was super excited to finally start reading this book! I did get the novella as well, I’m just one of those readers who’s really bad about reading novellas before series or really reading them at all, so I haven’t had the chance to read it yet. Any thoughts on the novella Bitter Sweet Love? Whose read it?? Comment below 🙂

My Review

The Plot: The story line in general in White Hot Kiss was unique in and of itself. It added a twist to demons/gargoyles that I had never encountered before. Layla (the female lead) is the odd man out with being a combination of the two (half demon, half Warden or gargoyle). With no place to really fit in, the Wardens take her under their wing (hah literally) where she is constantly scrutinized for being half demon and unable to morph into a full on Warden (guardian angel divine being type thing). As certain demons begin to surface “topside” and strange events occur around Layla, the truth comes out about who she truly is. In her struggle to escape her fate she has the dark yet totally gorgeous and endearing Upper Level Demon Roth to help her and of course stir up feelings as well! And thus a twisted (yet hot) romance ensues…

All of these factors made for a fast paced story, filled with unforeseen developments, desperate situations and an intricate plot line that will leave you on the edge of your seat with your face glued to the book (in my case Kindle) for hours at a time.

The Romance: As events play out and Layla digs deeper into her past, Roth is alongside her all the way. So naturally feelings grow between the two. Roth is one of the few whom Layla actually can be intimate with since he is a demon and doesn’t have a soul that is susceptible to being sucked out as any other human would.  Thus, everything romantic is completely new to her and that doesn’t escape Roth’s attention. Though Layla attempts to ignore her stirring feelings for Roth at first, she can’t deny how she feels for very long. Let’s just say, things get pretty heated between the two of them. Their romance was the PERFECT balance of witty banter and adorable. But I would expect no less from JLA!

Layla’s Character: Yet another great thing Jennifer Armentrout creates in her writing is the perfect female lead. One who is fierce in her determination, and steadfast in her will to get sh** done the way she feels is best to do it, which means without always letting the man take all the credit while she sits on the sidelines crying. Layla was ideal in every way as well as the perfect narrator!

Overall Thoughts: White Hot Kiss had its own individuality that made for a page turning romantic suspense journey (could I throw in any more adjectives?…eh.. probably). By the time the ending rolled around, my heart was pumping and I was up waay past my bedtime. There was quite the development in the last couple chapters that left me soo ready for more, but also very interested to see where the story will take me next. I would definitely recommend White Hot Kiss to any fans of paranormal romance, and especially to those who already enjoy reading Jennifer Armentrout’s books!
