“He was my darkness and I was his light. We couldn’t exist without each other.”
For me, life was simple. I went to school and studied. I spent time with my friends and stayed out of trouble. I didn’t drink or swear and I only dated gentlemen. I was the typical good girl with a bright future. My world seemed perfect.
But that was about to change.
Ryder Delaney was the one imperfection in my life. He was the bad boy, the black sheep, the one your mother always warned you about. He had only one hard-and-fast rule – Don’t fall in love.
But some rules were meant to be broken.
We were best friends, inseparable since childhood despite our differences. I knew the real man hiding behind the tattoos and bad attitude. He knew all my secrets and dreams. But he didn’t know there was one thing I wanted and couldn’t have…him.
But sometimes Fate has a way of intervening. Soon our world collapsed. War erupted. Darkness prevailed. Alone and on the run, our only goal was to survive and to ignore the feelings we had for each other. But love is powerful…
and so is the darkness.
Promise Me Darkness was not my typical apocalyptic read. Most of the time my kind of end of the world scenario involves zombies and/or paranormal creatures taking over, but this book brought a certain reality to what the possible end of the U.S. could really be like. It’s not death by the walking dead, or plague, or angels, nope its full on terrorism which unfortunately is a possibility in today’s world.
“Within a matter of minutes, the United States had turned into a third world country. This was our reality now.”
I felt like this realistic scenario was interesting to wrap my mind around. Technology is completely down, and its every man for himself. And Ryder and Maddie are thrown right into it.
Ryder and Maddie’s relationship is adorable and frustrating at the same time. They’ve known each other all their lives and they understand each other better than they understand themselves.
“I needed someone who knew me, the real me. I needed the person who knew all my secrets and fears. I wanted the person who fought passionately and lived passionately. I wanted my best friend. “
Of course there’s one problem…Ryder is a MAJOR player! However, that doesn’t stop either of them from having some intense feelings toward each other, feelings that come to a head as they go on the run fighting for survival.Ryder is extremely protective of Maddie, which I find SO attractive in any alpha male lead, and numerous situations arise in which Ryder’s protective side comes out hard core. Their relationship is so tumultuous, there were so many moments where I was thinking oh just shut up and love each other already! But it’s the struggle that makes the book all the better. There were also plenty of times where I was angry with Maddie for putting up with way too much of Ryder’s douchebaggary, if I were her I would have kicked Ryder to the curb, but… I’m glad she doesn’t. I won’t give anything away but I can tell you, you’ll be rooting for them and anxious to see things work out between them.
Paige Weaver did a fantastic job developing a substantial apocalyptic setting. The trials Ryder and Maddie face trying to survive are realistic and enthralling. Just when you think things are slowing down, something terrible happens that leaves you on the edge of your seat. This book is good sized, but the pages fly, there is never a dull moment, and their relationship is downright sexy! By the end of the book, a new development occurs leaving you in need for book two, titled: Promise Me Light. It’s release date is September, 24th! I would most definitely recommend Promise Me Light to all New Adult readers.
Be sure to stop back here on September 26th for my stop on the Promise Me Light Blog Tour hosted by The Book Hookup to read my review of the book! The Blog tour is going on from September 23rd to October 4th. Check out this awesome interview with Ryder and Gavin (Ryder’s brother), and an interview with Paige Weaver Here!
